This drift towards growing anti-intellectualism did not go entirely unchallenged. In October 1957, following the launch of Sputnik, criticism of high colleges grew to become front-page news, spurring a high-profile debate about issues of secondary education.
High School Lecturers
Before the 1950s, most younger black people, significantly those in the South, had few opportunities for any high-school education. But despite a collection of unanimous Supreme Court decisions meant to reverse this development, in the ensuing years large numbers of black college students failed to achieve entry to one of the best programs the newly built-in colleges provided.
